Walk to End Alzheimer’s

The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s is held in over 600 cities and communities across the U.S., and, this year, the walk held in Yaphank, New York is the closest community walk to Peconic Landing.

One in three seniors passes away due to Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, and over six million people in the United States are currently living with Alzheimer’s. While no cure yet exists for this disease, the Alzheimer’s Association works every day to fund research that makes advances in diagnoses and treatments for the disease.

What to Do Before the Walk

The Walk to Alzheimer’s in Yaphank is being held on October 7, 2023. Leading up to the day of the walk, you can register for the walk or donate to the Alzheimer’s Association online.

Registration for this event is free for all ages, and participants are encouraged to spread the word about the event using popular Walk to End Alzheimer’s hashtags, like #Walk2EndAlz and #ENDALZ. Facebook users can also create their own fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Everyone, whether or not they join the walk, can join the Peconic Landing fundraising team on the Walk to End Alzheimer’s website. Team members can share the fundraiser on social media or donate to the fundraiser to help raise the most funds for the Alzheimer’s Association with us.

On the Day of the Walk

When October 7 rolls around, participants of the Yaphank walk should check in at Suffolk County Farm, located at 350 Yaphank Avenue, at 9:00 a.m. A ceremony will be held prior to the walk at 10:00 a.m., and the walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. The length of the walk route is approximately two miles.

People in Walk for Alzheimers

Upon check-in, all participants will receive a Promise Garden Flower. Participants may choose the color of flower that best represents their connections to the disease. A blue flower represents a person currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, a purple flower represents someone who has lost a loved one due to Alzheimer’s disease, a yellow flower represents someone caring for a patient with Alzheimer’s disease, and an orange flower represents someone who supports the ending of Alzheimer’s around the world.

After the Walk to End Alzheimer’s

After the walk has ended, you can continue to support the Alzheimer’s Association by donating to the association and sharing information about how others can donate as well. If you registered for the 2023 walk and raised at least $100 for the association, you may receive a Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2023 tee shirt in the mail.

If you or your loved one is living with Alzheimer’s disease, know that you can receive memory care at a Continuing Care Retirement Community, such as Peconic Landing. At Peconic Landing, we offer assisted living options with memory support, and we are nationally recognized as a Person-Centered Long-Term Care Community. Here, we work with all residents to achieve the best quality of life possible every day.
